The claim

「The more calcium in pregnancy, the better the baby’s bones」

Verdict

Myth

Calcium beyond what you need does not turn into better bones. The tolerable upper intake level for adults is 2,000–2,500 mg a day, and high-dose calcium supplements may raise the risk of kidney stones; calcium can also interfere with iron absorption, so calcium and iron supplements are best taken at different times. Follow your doctor’s advice, and put food first — dairy, tofu, dark leafy greens.
