The claim

「The earlier you teach reading, the smarter and better-prepared the child」

Verdict

Myth

Spending the preschool years on letter drills buys no reliable long-term edge. The AAP's literacy policy statement makes shared reading a core practice that paediatric primary care should actively promote — because what actually lays the groundwork for later reading is spoken vocabulary, enjoyment of books and back-and-forth interaction, not how many characters a child recognised early. Swapping play and conversation for decoding tasks risks spending down the pleasure of reading first.
