The claim

「Boys just talk later — no need to worry」

Verdict

Partly true

Even if a small average difference between the sexes is real, it comes nowhere near explaining a clear language delay in an individual child — "boys just talk later" is one of the most common reasons families put off getting help. The NIDCD advice does not vary by sex: if you have any concern about speech or language, get it assessed, and that assessment usually includes a hearing test. Nor do the red flags: no words at all by the first birthday, no two-word combinations by two, or any loss of language at any point all warrant prompt evaluation.
