The claim

「Never touch or wash the soft spot」

Verdict

Myth

Feeling the fontanelle is part of the routine newborn physical exam — clinicians palpate it at every check, and may even auscultate over it. Ordinary washing and touching will not hurt your baby, so wash normally; being afraid to touch it is what lets cradle cap build up. What is worth watching is the fontanelle itself: it should be flat and firm, and it is a clearly sunken one (dehydration) or a persistently bulging one (raised intracranial pressure) that warrants medical attention.
